Main Course

The course sits on relatively flat carse land formed by ancient marine clays. As a result there are only very gentle slopes to contend with. Probably because of this and to aid drainage, raised greens are a characteristic of Haggs Castle and accuracy of approach can be essential.

During the 1990’s the construction of the M77 motorway entailed the loss of some ground to the club and six new holes have been created to redress the balance. Designed by Dave Thomas they keep very much to another theme which previously characterised Haggs Castle – position. Dogleg holes are de rigeur here and on the new stretch (the 4th to the 9th) even the two straighter par 4’s (5th and 6th) require some positional thought.

Hole 1: Moss Farm

A generous par 5. Avoid the bunker on the right off the tee. A well bunkered green and a five gets you off to a nice start.

Par 5 - Yardage 470

Hole 3: Corkerhill Village

Dense trees all the way up the right so keep left of centre while avoiding bunkers. Approach shot plays longer than the yardage.

Par 4 - Yardage 358

Hole 5: Haggs View

With a water hazard all the way down the right it is safer to keep to the left half. Do this, avoid the bunker and the green is opened up.

Par 4 - Yardage 402

Hole 7: Long Short

A long par 3. Take plenty of club even with the pin at the front. Shots leaked right are liable to find the burn if not long enough. Green is two tiered but will gather any ball coming in front left.

Par 3 - Yardage 188

Hole 9: Roon the Bend

An altogether tougher prospect – position is critical. Aim drive at the tree in the fairway to leave mid/long iron to the green. Avoid letting approach go left as this leads to bunkers down a steep slope.

Par 4 - Yardage 406

Hole 11: Plateau

Choose plenty of club to carry front bunker and upslope at the front. Important to hit this elevated green and hold it or you will face a difficult chip.

Par 3 - Yardage 158

Hole 13: Lochinch

Beware of the Cart River to the right – out of bounds beyond this! Iron off the tee is a good idea even if it leaves a longish second shot.

Par 4 - Yardage 323

Hole 15: The Gap

Dogleg right. Three wood or iron off the tee for position to leave a shortish iron to the green.

Par 4 - Yardage 336

Hole 17: Mosspark

Avoid the bunker left and you should find this an easy par four offering a birdie chance.

Par 4 - Yardage 343
